Follow Your Heart: What The Hell Does That Even Mean?!
  • The Heart as a Metaphor: So literally, this cliche doesn't suggest we physically walk where our heart does, because our heart doesn't have legs and even if it did we would be dead if it left our body. The heart is rather a metaphor for our passions in life. What excites you? What gives you hope and inspiration? What do you love most? The answers to these questions will lead you to understand "your heart" in this metaphysical sense.
  • Being in Tune with Your Body: Following your heart suggests that you have body awareness...because what you are truly passionate about should get your heart beating faster. Even in the case of your heart beating faster because of fears, unless there is real danger (ie. a wild snake, a raging fire), your development as a person depends upon you doing what you're afraid to do. In situations of fear, you must think of your body's reaction of increased heart rate, sweating, and flushed cheeks as an clear indication that you must act instead of flee (see Fight or Flight).
  • Trust Your Instincts: Whenever you have an inclination or a feeling about something - perhaps it is somewhere to go, someone to talk to, or something to do, you should pursue it by putting your faith in these feelings and acting upon them. Your heart has the "intelligence" of knowing much more than you can possibly be conscious of at any given moment.
  • Do What You Love: "Follow your heart" is another way of saying do what you love. If you love singing, then sing. If you love gardening, then keep a garden. If you love another person, then express your love fully and don't hold any of it back.
