1. Set goals based on what you want, rather than what you don’t want. Goals should be all about attaining what you desire, rather than avoiding experiences or circumstances you wish to avoid. A better way to say, “My goal is to loose weight” is, “My goal is to feel lighter and have more energy.”
Notice too that the goal is stated in the affirmative. For example, “My goal is to be happier in 2016” is exponentially better than “My goal is to not be as sad in 2016”.
2. Make them specific. “In 2016, I want make more money” – this is a great first step. How about saying, “My goal is to increase my yearly income by 5K” Now you have a firm basis of action.
3. Set goals that you believe you can achieve.
I would never set a goal to sprouts feathers and fly away. I believe this is possible metaphorically, but not literally. I must set a goal I believe I can achieve. In 2016, I want to be more social, but I’m not going to set a goal to make 20 new friends. I don’t believe that is possible. But if my goal is make 5 new friends – that’s something I can believe in, hope for, and strive for with confidence.
4. Go after what you really want.
If you’re trying to loose weight – why? Is it because you want to avoid being judged? Or like in my previous example, do you want to feel lighter and more energetic? Be careful of the deeper reasoning behind your goals. Only a goal set with love is a goal worth shedding blood, sweat, and tears over.
5. A resolution is not a wish, but rather a commitment to change.
Take your goals seriously. A New Years resolution will be nothing more than a wisp of an idea unless you take the time to really think about it, write it down, and create some plan of action. Don’t be like most people who turn desires into petty wishes. Be inspired to turn dreams into reality.
6. Don’t set goals without accountability.
Your actions affect other people, so get your friends and family involved. You have to get past your embarrassment or fear of judgment in order to succeed. You must be willing to share both your self and your visions of the future. Some people will scoff at your ideas, but others will believe in you, which makes it worth it.
7. Be flexible and reasonable.
Don’t stake everything on your goals! Remember: goal setting is about making your life better – not more stressful, not more difficult. Don’t set goals to overhaul your entire life. Set your 2016 goals on small changes that will make a big difference.
Set your goals for 2016! Better late than never.
