I think when most people hear "meditation," they think of a bald guy sitting with his legs crossed, eyes closed, and in a temple or perched atop a rock.
Meditation, as I have come to understand it through actual experience, is the practice of aligning our consciousness with the rhythm of nature. Our bodies are automatically in sync with the rhythm of nature as long as we are alive - the lungs fill and release, brain sleeps and awakens, and the heart beats. The mind, however, is not bound by the same natural laws. Our minds can conjure visions and feelings from what seems like other universes and dimensions - and this is exactly what our minds are often doing.
Meditation is any activity where we get "lost" in the doing and being with our bodies. It could be playing soccer, making music, having sex - or in the common interpretation - just sitting quietly and breathing (and perhaps repeating a mantra, like, "Om".)
So how does this relate to goals? Goals are best planned out in an analytical frame of mind, where we are not immersed in our activity. However, they are best achieved when are chatter-y brains are silent or occupied with the actual DOING.
Meditation strengthens my ability to stay engaged, and to channel dispersed energy (random thoughts --> random experiences) INTO focused energy (purposeful thoughts --> meaningful experiences). I highly recommend it.
